RE: Elkhart Indiana

FWIW, the RV Hall of Fame will let you PARK overnight in their lot (we did that this summer). Park means no slides out or jacks down (then it becomes camping and they're not zoned for that). It was good for a morning visit - we enjoyed it! ST

RE: Winter travel to Alaska

Hey ak-traveller! You got any sunlight up there now??? Nice to see you still about - NH has been chilly - we have some snow, but not what I suspect you guys have! Take care! Happy holidays! ST

RE: Ferry service between Skagway & Haines

We took the marine hiway from Haines to Skagway this summer - no trouble for us in a 'B' - but did watch a 5er have to back ON to the boat in Haines. Yes, there were folks there to help, but it was quite a challenge for the driver. As Joe B's photos show, you load/unload from a side door - it is not a straight-on load/unload... But the guy did it - just took some time. ST

RE: First timer headed to Alaska in "09" (truck & camper)

Forgot to mention - "Alaska toursaver" book - costs $100, but gets you "buy 1 - get 1" at many attractions - just using it once for a whalewatch out of Seward saved us $140, so we were "up" $40 just with that, plus many other places like the SeaLife Center, Eldorado Mine, etc. Figured we SAVED over $200 by using this book. RE: First timer headed to Alaska in "09" (truck & camper)

Resources - Mike and Terri Church's book on Alaska RV camping; Milepost; lots of free stuff from info booths! Check back in this forum - the thread this summer was "On the road to Alaska" - you will find a ton of info there from all of us who were "on the road"! Look at posts from sue.t, joe b., ak traveler, explorenorth - all have valuable input - likely others - these folks all helped us in our planning/travels! ST

RE: Thanksgiving Camping in NE

Also - a couple of Nat'l Forest CG's along Kancamagus Highway/Rte 112 in Lincoln, NH, are year-round - no hookups, no water, but they are usually plowed if needed. FYI - forecast this week into next is nighttime temps getting down into the teens - so plan accordingly! ST

RE: DVD/VCR Recorder/Player with digital tuner

Hi - actually, I just bought one of those Magnavox at our Wally world 2 weeks ago - our VCR just died, and I needed something, so I figured this would get me a simple solution to a converter box... sort of... Apparently, these days you don't hook such a beast up to your tv with just the coax cable any more - you need to use the cable w/ RCA plugs - the coax is just a signal pass-thru - meaning if you want to record 1 channel and watch another, you will still need a converter box. AND...my tv doesn't have RCA inputs, so I needed to get an RF modulator to connect between the DVD/VCR/digital tuner "thing" and my old analog tv - so figure another $20 for that box! Now with all this done, I don't seem to even be able to receive digital tv signals where I'm at!!! Awaiting a new rotator control box to tweak the roof antenna for better reception... Aaauuuggghhhh!!! Beginning to wonder if cable isn't cheaper!!! As for the Magnovox all-in-one, I like the DVD recorder funtion, can still play (or record, but not planning to) VCR tapes, can't comment on the digital tuner yet. Hope this helps - and I haven't even tackled the one in the 'B'! ST

RE: Whale watching and Glacier tours

This past summer we enjoyed the Reknown Tour to Kenai Fjords out of Seward - it's in the Alaska TourSaver book - just that 1 use more than covered the cost of the book. From Haines we took Fjordland Tour to Juneau - saw as much if not more wildlife from his boat than the "official" tours! Highly recommend that ride! ST

Hi - we stayed there 2 summers ago - enjoyed the SP - paddled around just fine - didn't do any fishing, tho... ST

RE: Maine / New Hampshire Coast Campers.... Help....

Try Harraseekett (?sp) wharf in Freeport, ME, altho it has gotten a lot more popular recently. Also Bobs Clam Hut next to Kittery Trading Post, ME. Madison, CT wins with Lenny and Joes seafood - worth the stop on Rte 1 on your way north! Plenty of others out there, too! ST

RE: Vermont state campgrounds

Yes, both Umbagog and Lake Francis have limited number of sites with E/W - Cannon and Ellacoya don't have that many sites total - they are specifically advertised as RV parks. I've never been to North Beach, but know folks who have - their comment was it was very close to busy area - lots of streetlights, etc. ST

RE: Canadian Rockies/

OK - I'm trying to learn something here...no flaming intended... So, in today's brake systems (disk/drum) - the heat from friction of the pad against the disk/drum is sufficient to cause the brake fluid in either the caliper or the cylinder to BOIL? How's this work? When a liquid is heated, it expands, which would cause an INCREASE in brake pad pressure, wouldn't it? I drive trucks - like 30,000# trucks - air brake systems - nothing to boil - have seen the pads glazed right over from hard braking. How common is this phenomenom? ST

RE: Canadian Rockies/

This past summer we visited the area on our way to AK - liked it so much spent a couple extra days there! We used the travel guide by Moon to the Canadian Rockies - found it quite helpful. Enjoyed camping in Kananaskis County just south of Banff NP - dry camping, tho... Hills? Braking? BOILING brake fluid??? NOT! Glazed-over brake pads, maybe - never seen the fluid boil!!! Oh well - enjoy the trip! ST

RE: Vermont state campgrounds

Minor correction regarding Old Man of the Mountain's post about New hampshire State Parks (yes, I know the OP asked about VT). NH DOES have a few SP's with hookups! Cannon Mountain, Ellacoya, and Hampton Beach (I think this one does) all have full hookups. Lake Francis has E/W, as does Lake Umbagog. Moose River near St J is a nice small park - been there twice. As far as VT SP's go, I know at least Grand Isle has some sites that DO NOT allow genny use - can't speak for other VT parks. Hope this helps! ST

RE: North-East Truck Camping "Haunted" Jamboree

Well no wonder there wasn't any room for us Sat nite - you TC guys had it all!!! We stayed at Winter island that Sun nite instead - nice little place! Had a solid frost Mon AM. Looks like all had a good time! FWIW - we had a Northstar pop-up for a dozen years before we got our van - DW was starting to have too hard a time climbing into it due to illness so we got something lower to the ground. ST

RE: Alaska Highway

10 border crossing this past summer to and from AK - never an inspection - only a couple questions. Never got asked about food, dogfood, etc. Funny thing - 2 weeks ago crossed into Canada from northern part of our state (NH) while camping - this time BOTH Cdn and US inspectors wanted to look in the side door to see our dog and make sure no one else was in our rig!!! Just found that interesting! We used credit card as much as possible - but always kept enough Cdn currency to fill the gas tank if needed. Food was pricier, some types harder to get, so we carried dry/canned goods as much as possible, but tried NOT to have any fresh meat/produce at border crossings or risk losing it (never happened). ST

RE: Glacier National Park Recommendations

This past August we stayed just outside Glacier in Kalispell at Rocky Mountain Hi park before we went to Glacier and on our way out - reasonable, full hookups - Kalispell was a nice community. In the park we stayed a couple nights at Two Medicine (dry camping) - great view - nice place for kite flying! Then went to Many Glacier. More hiking options at Many Glacier, not the dramatic views of Two Medicine, but did see mountain goats! Then back to Kalispell. We like the NP CG's - and these were both nice ones. ST

RE: Maine coast

Gotta go with Bar harbor/Acadia NP area, too. We dry camp at Blackwoods in Acadia itself. Also, you can overnight at LLBeans parking lot in Freeport on the way up. Recompence is a nice CG on the water in Freeport. Chewonki is a nice CG on the mid-coast. Camden Hills SP is near the water, has some hookups, not as pricey... Many of the actual waterfront CG's tend to be costly, IMHO. ME coast is very nice - worth the visit! ST

RE: Lonesome Lake Trail (White Mountains, NH)......WOW !!!!

Welcome to my world!!! And folks wonder why I travel! this summer we were in Alaska - someone asked where I was from - told them New Hampshire, and the response was "You came HERE?" So we do have a good reputation! Glad you had fun - it is a nice hike. ST

RE: Open CG's near Salem and Plymouth, Mass

Hi all! Just a follow-up post! Had a really nice 3 days visiting Plymouth and Salem. Spent Sat night at Wompatuck - it was quite nice, at least at this time of year - bet it is hopping during the busy season!!! got a site no problem, drove to Plimoth Plantation for the afternoon, back to CG. Sun AM back to Plymouth to see the "Rock" and Mayflower II, (same admission ticket from the previous day) - about a 1/2 hr ride, then up to Salem - Witch-Central this time of year! Thanks for the suggestion of Winter Island - very convenient for us - really similar to AK campgrounds, although this parking lot was paved, not gravel!!! Could have hopped the trolley/shuttle bus right there to get into Town, but our daughter came up frm CT to meet us, so rode with her back to Salem proper. Didn't realize just how spooked-out that place gets - haunted happenings everywhere! Wandered the main streets, visited a couple sites, dinner at Finz, then back to the CG. $40 was a bit pricey, but 30A of clean power kept the heater going fine (had a frost overnight). This AM back to House of Seven Gables after strolling around Fort Pickering right at the Winter Island CG. Looks like some of their 50A sites are out of service right now. Don't know what the reasons the other poster wouldn't go there - for us it worked out fine. So, thanks for the tips, everyone! Snow in the forecast for us for this Wed., so better drain the tanks and put it to bed for this season! ST
